Workshop on Tailings Dam Breach

 

The Canada Peru Chamber of Commerce and Anddes, jointly organized the Workshop on Tailings Dam Breach Analyses, which was held on January, 29-30, 2024. The main theme of the workshop was the use and application of the technical bulletin elaborated by the Canadian Dam Association (CDA), considering the specifc conditions of each dam, in order to classify them and plan for emergencies.

 

The CDA specialists in charge of the workshop, Mamum Al-Mamum, Director and Principal Consultant - Dam, and Violeta Martin, hydro-technical engineer, were part of the team that prepared the TDBA technical bulletin.

 

The workshop was focused on the problems and specific challenges of tailings dams, with the objectives of promoting the scientific aspects of breach analyses, raising awareness of the risk of failure, and advocating for the use of the technical bulletin. Additionally, it aimed to provide training for TDBA dam safety professionals to conduct such studies on their projects, share experiences, and gather feedback from participants to advance the current state of TDBA practice.

 

The main themes that were developed:

1. A brief description of the Bulletin and the TDBA process.
2. Terminologies
3. Tailings dam failure scenarios and failure modes / breach mechanisms.
4. Geotechnical aspects of tailings relevant to TDBA.
5. Tailings rheological behaviour.
6. Challenges for breach modelling and hydrograph/outflow volume estimation.
7. Selection of TDBA modelling cases.
8. Modelling of the breakout process (hydraulic modelling).
9. Geomechanical models and their limitations.
10. Scope and requirements of sensitivity analysis.
11. Flood mapping and reporting.
12. Common errors and pitfalls.
13. Case studies based on recent failures.

 International Workshop on Mining Safety -  Transportation - Geomechanics - Ventilation

 

The Canada Peru Chamber of Commerce held the first international workshop on mining safety, with the participation of a renowned Canadian speaker, Glenn Lyle, Director of Safety, Health and Risk Management of MIRARCO (Mining Innovation Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation).

 

During the workshop, the main topics related to mining safety were discussed, such as: Transportation, Ventilation and Geo-Mechanics. The objective of the workshop was to promote and understand the proper set-up of a risk assessment program and to know the best practices in risk prevention in which Canada is a great world reference.

 

About MIRARCO:

(Mining Innovation Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation).

The leading center for mining research and innovation in Canada. It is the largest applied mining research institution in North America. Non-profit institute working in conjunction with Laurentian University, and related institutes such as CROSH and Living with Lakes Centre.

 

Workshop objectives:

 

• The importance of hazard identification and risk assessment, and how this fits into the Safety Risk Management Program.
• Discussion of the different risk assessment tools commonly used, and how to select the ideal tool for a particular situation.
• How to set up a risk assessment program, what are the key steps and who are the key levels within the organization that should be involved in the program.
• Next steps in developing a risk assessment, team composition, key factors to ensure success. Discussion on the application of these aspects to hazards related to transportation, geomechanics and ventilation.
• Conduct a risk assessment for the 3 specific areas Discussion session. Why risk assessment is a key step in the safety risk management process.

 

 

Workshop on Evaluation of the Main Risks in the Mining Industry and their Application to Hazards in: Vehicle Interaction, Rock Mechanics and Ventilation

 

 

The Canada Peru Chamber of Commerce organized the workshop "Evaluation of the main risks in the mining industry and their application to hazards in: Vehicle Interaction, Rock Mechanics and Ventilation", which was held on April 21 and 23, 2021. The workshop was attended by 31 executives from Osinergmin.

 

The speaker for this important workshop was Mr. Glenn Lyle: Director of Health, Safety and Risk Management of MIRARCO, with the support of the Goodman School of Mines.

Educational center founded to meet the employment deficit in the mining industry in Canada, with specializations in each key area that defines the mining cycle: mining exploration, project feasibility, mine development, mine closure and monitoring, as well as, the development of 3 key concepts for society, which are affected by mining activity: community and people, environment and economy.

 

Workshop objectives:

• The importance of hazard identification and risk assessment, and how this fits into a safety risk management program.
• Different risk assessment tools commonly used and how to select the right tool for a particular situation.
• How to set up a risk assessment program; what are the key steps and who are the key levels within the organization, which should be involved in the program.
• Steps to perform a risk assessment, team composition, key points for success.
• Application of these principles to hazards in vehicle interaction, rock mechanics and ventilation.
• Conduct a risk assessment for the 3 specific areas: how to set up, how to divide into components, topics to discuss.

 

 

International Energy Workshop Specialized in LNG

 

The Canada Peru Chamber of Commerce organized the International Energy Workshop specialized in LNG, which was held on December 1, 2020. The event was attended by 30 Osinergmin executives.

 

The speakers elected for this important workshop were:

• Dan Allan: President and CEO of the Canadian Society for Unconventional Resources. 
• Brad Hayes: Director of the Canadian Society for Unconventional Resources (CSUR) and past president of the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists (CSPG).

The objective of this workshop forum was to present Canadian best practices related to LNG, especially related to:

• Canadian gas resources available for LNG
• Canadian LNG projects: commercial and technical description of each project
• Advanced technologies employed in gas production and transportation and LNG compression/cooling
• Canadian LNG value chains
• Canada's position in global LNG trade
• Canadian experience and expertise in micro-LNG facilities

 

 

First International Mining Safety Workshop, Specialized in Tailing Dams

 

The Canada Peru Chamber of Commerce organized the first International Workshop on Mining Safety, specialized in Tailings Dams, which was held on June 8, 10 and 12, 2020. Thirty-two Osinergmin executives participated.

 

The speaker for this important workshop was Mr. Charles Dumaresq, Vice President of Science and Environmental Management at The Mining Association of Canada.
